Ft Myers BoatClub Recent Activities
June 10, 2008
Bella Demaio, 17, and Colin Iehle, 18, enjoyed one of Southwest Florida's most sought after activities - a boat ride on a gorgeous day - as much as any vibrant teenagers.
But Demaio is managing Down's syndrome, and Iehle contends with Pervasive Developmental Delay, a form of Cerebral Palsy. So the boating excursion they took last Saturday was a rarity for them; a short but welcome respite from the enormous, everyday challenges of living.
The trip was due to a good natured conspiracy between local massage therapist Pete Campo, the Iona McGregor Fire District, the Fort Myers Boat Club and Buckingham Exceptional Student Center. It was Campo's third trip on his pontoon boat with disabled children.

Our second “Children’s Excursion” occurred this past weekend as Captain Pete and the Iona-McGregor Fire District mobilized into action to treat Alec to a day on the water. Alec suffers from a disability that leaves him unable to hear or speak. The boating excursions are set up to provide both entertainment and therapeutic advantages to children that spend their days battling physical or mental disabilities.
In this case, Alec was thoroughly entertained by the Iona-McGregor firefighters as they provided a tour of their fire boat, trailed Alec on the water with their emergency lights, and provided unlimited access to their fire truck. We are very glad to hear that Alec and his family had a wonderful day at the marina and aboard with Captain Pete.

The Iona-McGregor Fire District launched its new fire boat at Ft Myers BoatClub. The boat was officially christened this past month off of the docks on the north peninsula. The boat was named after fallen fire fighter, Lt. John Decker, and his widow was on hand to break the bottle of bubbly across her hull.
The boat is equipped with inboard jet drives, and has been rated as a life safety vessel. The boat will be dispatched with full paramedic crew for issues other than fire along the Caloosahatchee River in the Iona-McGregor district. Ft Myers BoatClub is currently providing the full time dockage for the vessel.

Alex Rodriguez was treated to his first boat ride from the marina facility. Ft Myers BoatClub was approached to host the event due to the handicapped accessibility of our new floating dock structures.
Ft Myers BoatClub called upon our relationship with Iona-McGregor Fire District to make sure all went well. Based on the smiles and tears of all participants we can proudly say that all went well.
We are currently planning a second venture for March, with the goal of introducing boating to a new child each month. To see more press about this event - click here.

The floating docks around the perimeter of the North Peninsula are nearly complete. Patrick Ruff, the General Contractor, is visibly excited about the current installation of the floating docks system that includes full coverage of brick pavers. “No one has ever done this,” said Ruff. “It took us quite a while to engineer the system for laying pavers directly onto the nearly one mile of floating docks that surround the property. This property is filled with brand new ideas.”
